It aims for the highest levels of performance, safety and quality for any shooter in the field. (Photo/Todd Fletcher)Īccording to the company’s literature, the Beretta APX A1 takes the proven ergonomics and reliability of the APX family to the next level with integrated features derived from feedback from military, law enforcement and tactical shooters. The Beretta APX A1 and the Steiner MPS make a formidable team that should be dependable, reliable and accurate for years of service. In the mid-1980s, the Beretta 92 was selected as the United States military’s standard-issue handgun and was issued as the M9 Pistol. Remarkably, Beretta has been owned by the same family throughout its history. Founded in 1526 – that’s 497 years ago for the mathematically challenged – Beretta has been in continuous business making firearms and firearm accessories for military and law enforcement use. Beretta may have the longest history of any firearm manufacturer in the world. When I was asked if I wanted to review Beretta’s latest law enforcement duty handgun offering, I jumped at the opportunity to get my hands on Beretta’s APX A1. I must have done enough to impress the department rangemaster because he eventually sent me to firearms instructor school using that Beretta 96D. I put tens of thousands of rounds through that pistol trying to become a competent shooter. 40 S&W that looked and felt a lot like the 92. For the majority who have never heard of the Beretta 96D, it was a double-action only. Instead, it was the little-known and rarely issued Beretta 96D. I was utterly disappointed to discover it wasn’t the venerable Beretta 92. Comes with 2 magazines.Back when I started my career as a police officer, my first department-issued handgun was a Beretta. The Beretta APX Semi-Auto Pistol disassembles easily into 5 subcomponents. Dovetailed, 3-dot sights are quick to acquire in varied light conditions and an integral Picatinny rail provides for attaching aftermarket tactical accessories. The Nitride-finished slide features wide, aggressive serration to maximize the shooter's grip. The APX has a unique striker deactivation button that allows fieldstripping the weapon without pulling the trigger first. The trigger mechanism also features a drop safety and there is an automatic striker block safety. A safety lever in the center of the trigger prevents the pistol from firing unless the trigger is intentionally pressed in the center and pulled all the way back. The trigger breaks cleanly, and it has a tactile and audible short reset. The distance from the bore axis to the top of the handgrip has been kept to a minimum to enhance accurate fire on quick follow-up shots. The APX comes with 3 interchangeable backstraps to customize fit for nearly any hand. The polymer frame houses an internal, serialized, stainless steel chassis, allowing true modularity. This is a full-size sidearm tailored for military and law enforcement use, which is also well suited for civilian personal defense. The APX™ Semi-Auto Pistol from Beretta® utilizes a striker-fired mechanism and outstanding ergonomics to deliver rapid shots on target, with precision accuracy and unfailing reliability.
